Why You Need To Fire People From Your Life
One of the most important decisions you’ll ever make is to fire people from your life.
Being able to discern who qualifies to be part of your “inner circle” is more important than you could ever believe.
Most likely, there is someone in your life right now who is wearing you thin and, if you’re honest with yourself, has done so for a while. This is the most obvious candidate for your first firing session.
Consider your life as an e-mail inbox. You choose who stays in the inbox and what goes in the deleted items folder. But the bottom line is that you control the mouse. Here’s the big question: When will you click “delete” and to whom?
I’ve seen too many people delay taking action to fire people and it has cost them dearly. You don’t want to be that person. Not sure if you’re due for a good firing session in your life? Here are a few red flags that might help you decide if you need to click the delete button.
1. When you get off the phone with this person, do you feel the need to unwind?
2. Do you feel defensive in this person’s presence?
3. Are you rationalizing why you believe he or she is a good friend/family member to keep around?
4. Do you feel that you can’t “be yourself” without being criticized for being you?
These are only a few signs to look for, but they are all worthy of good ole’ firing. Here’s why…
When you put off making this decision, you’re losing much more than you could ever imagine. The re-coup period you go through after dealing with these people is costing you, and you don’t even know it.
People who choose (notice I said “choose”) to stay around these people remind me of drug addicts. Many of them actually thrive on the negativity and bad feelings they receive from certain individuals. It’s like the addict having a little cocaine and saying, “Just one more line…”
It’s time to snap out of it. Start firing today! When you make the decision to become more and succeed on a level that most people don’t, you’ll need to take uncommon steps and make uncommon decisions. This is just one of them and is only a very basic foundational move you’ll need to make before you can proceed to the next level of your personal and professional life.
This decision truly sets the stage and proves you’re man or woman enough to take charge of your life. Keep in mind that once you fire your first friend, family member, co-worker, etc., you will go through a short phase of guilt. The reason you’ll feel guilty is because you believe this person “needs” you.
But believe me, they don’t need you; you can’t give them what they need. Once this small phase of guilt passes and you actually start believing that it was the right and necessary choice, three critical breakthroughs will happen in your life:
1. You’ll have more time.
2. You’ll have more peace.
3. You’ll have more focus.
Here’s why your life will change:
With more time, you’ll be able to create more products, write more, and spend more time with your real friends and family that don’t suck the life out of you.
With more peace comes less stress. With less stress come better creativity and decision making, which will allow you to make more money and be a better person.
And last but not least, with more focus you’ll get things done much faster than ever before, thus creating more opportunities.
